Zacatecas authorities identify leader in July 18 mass killing

The state government of Zacatecas announced on 6 August that the Fiscalía General de Justicia has identified the presumed leader of the criminal group responsible for the July 18 mass killing in the municipalities of Pánuco, Morelos and Sain Alto, where ten people were found dead. The individual's name and the cartel to which he belongs were not disclosed to avoid compromising the investigation. Secretary‑General of Government Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza said, “La Fiscalía ya tiene buenos avances en las líneas de investigación. No se pueden hacer públicas por el propio proceso.”

Security Secretary Arturo Medina Mayoral added that five civilians killed on 1 August in Calera were found with helmets and vests bearing four‑letter insignia commonly associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), though authorities have not yet confirmed the group's involvement. The operation seized eight long‑guns, three vehicles (including two belonging to the July 18 victims), and conducted 18 raids, confiscating 24 vehicles and detaining 16 people, three of whom are directly linked to the attack. A search on 5 August in the Niño Artillero community uncovered a female Bengal tiger, which investigators say helped locate the suspected leader.

The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and pursue further leads related to the massacre.
