Mexican Chamber of Deputies seeks to strengthen public resource oversight

Ricardo Monreal Ávila, president of the Political Coordination Board in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, has expressed a willingness to expand the powers of the Superior Auditor of the Federation (ASF). The goal is to enhance the agency's capacity for oversight, deepen the fight against corruption, and implement “in situ” audits. Monreal noted that Congress is open to constitutional modifications if necessary to ensure the ASF can effectively combat corruption.

Separately, federal deputy Ricardo Mejía Berdeja has filed a formal complaint with the ASF requesting an investigation into the alleged irregular use of approximately 1.5 billion pesos in public funds by the government of Coahuila, led by Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas. The complaint focuses on the expenditure of over 1.2 billion pesos for Expo Coahuila and nearly 300 million pesos for the Rodeo Saltillo event. Mejía Berdeja alleged that these funds were diverted to projects benefiting associates of the governor rather than addressing urgent infrastructure needs like water and sanitation.
