Mexican chemical industry faces 30% idle capacity amid energy shortages

The Mexican chemical industry is currently operating at 30% idle capacity due to insufficient supplies of natural gas, electricity, and raw materials, according to Jesús Sáenz, president of the Asociación Nacional de la Industria Química (ANIQ). During the LVIII National Forum of the Chemical Industry, Sáenz emphasized that the sector, which represents 1.6% of Mexico's GDP and supplies 95% of industrial value chains, requires coordinated action with the federal government to improve competitiveness and reduce dependence on imported gas.

Sáenz called for increased exploration of national reserves and urged Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) to provide more competitive raw materials and modernize refining and processing facilities. These measures are seen as essential to supporting the 'Plan México' and integrating more national value into regional supply chains.

In Peru, the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Perú (IIMP) has announced the program for PERUMIN 38, a major mining convention scheduled for September 2027 in Arequipa. The event will feature the Mining Summit to analyze sectoral policies, the TIS Forum focusing on technology and sustainability, and the EXTEMIN technological exhibition, which expects to host over 1,000 stands showcasing digital solutions and automation.
