Mexican states urge child safety measures during summer vacation
State authorities in Mexico have launched a coordinated campaign to prevent accidents involving children during the summer vacation period. The Sistema de Urgencias del Estado de México (SUEM) reports an average of 17 incidents per day, with 2,860 emergency calls recorded between June and August 2025, of which 514 occurred inside homes—a 13 % decrease from the previous year. Officials in the State of Mexico, Puebla, Coahuila and Veracruz advise parents and caregivers to keep chemicals, medicines and sharp objects out of reach, label cleaning products, secure balconies, windows and rooftops, and supervise children closely.
The Cruz Roja Veracruz highlighted a rise in poisonings, burns, falls and dog bites, urging families to store hazardous substances securely and to seek immediate medical help when accidents occur. Across the states, recommendations also include avoiding play in streets, using parks and designated recreational areas, and ensuring that children understand traffic safety. The overall goal is to reduce preventable injuries as children spend more time at home during the holiday break.
