Mexican cities expand hydration operations to combat extreme heat

The municipal government of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, led by Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal, continues its Hydration Operative. Daily patrols by the Civil Protection and Fire Department distribute free water and oral rehydration salts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in parks, plazas, hospitals and bus stops, targeting children, seniors and people with chronic illnesses.

In Baja California, the state health secretariat's "Verano Seguro" program, overseen by Health Secretary Adrián Medina Amarillas, has provided preventive medical care and hydration to 10,656 people. The initiative runs 342 Oral Hydration Houses across the state, with a major hydration point in Mexicali’s Parque del Mariachi serving 5,723 users, offering medical consultations, showers and oral rehydration packets. Both efforts aim to reduce heat‑related illnesses during the current period of extreme temperatures.
