Mexican courts sentence perpetrator in Tijuana femicide and identify victim in Reynosa killing

A Tijuana judge sentenced José Alfredo Benítez Ochoa to 35 years in prison for the 2022 femicide of 21‑year‑old Lucero Rangel Aburto, whose body was found inside a refrigerator. The court ruled he will not receive any sentence‑reduction benefits, and the homicide was determined to be caused by strangulation‑induced anoxemia.

In a separate case, authorities in Reynosa, Tamaulipas confirmed the identity of María Guadalupe Tolentino Romero, a 30‑year‑old woman from Tempoal, Veracruz, whose body was discovered in a canal on 23 May. She had been reported missing after taking a rideshare on 18 May. The investigation remains open with no arrests reported, and she is survived by three children.
