Mexican cultural initiatives highlight dance and 19th-century music
French choreographer Leïla Ka will present her contemporary dance piece, ‘Maldonne’, at the Teatro del Bosque Julio Castillo in Mexico. The performance features five dancers and 40 dresses that serve as physical extensions of identity, exploring themes of femininity, transformation, and resistance. The event is supported by the Mexican Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) as part of the celebrations for 200 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and France.
Simultaneously, the company ‘Ópera: Nuestra Herencia Olvidada’ is launching the international project ‘Raigambre’ across Europe. The project showcases the previously unpublished works of 16 Mexican female composers from the 19th century. The tour includes five galas in France and Spain, with performances scheduled at venues such as the Maison du Mexique in Paris, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, and the University of Granada. The project, researched and curated by musicologist Montserrat Pérez Lima, aims to highlight the musical legacy of these female precursors.
