Mexican customs official Carlos Eugenio Benítez Orta deported from US on organized‑crime charges

Mexican authorities announced that Carlos Eugenio Benítez Orta, a 46‑year‑old employee of the National Customs Agency (ANAM), was detained by U.S. authorities and handed over to Mexico at the Matamoros International Bridge. The joint statement from the Mexican Secretariat of Security and Protection (SSPC) and the U.S. agencies said the arrest was part of a coordinated operation targeting suspected links to organized crime. Benítez Orta, who supervised customs verifiers in Matamoros and held various administrative positions since 2008, will be transferred to the high‑security Altiplano federal prison in the State of Mexico, where he is expected to appear before a judge for an imputation hearing. The case is under investigation for alleged organized‑crime involvement, and the agencies pledged to pursue further legal actions in accordance with the law.
