Mexican dairy producers face losses from reduced government milk purchases
Mexican dairy producers are facing significant economic pressure due to a reduction in milk purchases by the federal government's Leche para el Bienestar program. The National Agricultural Council (CNA) has called for urgent dialogue with authorities to address these cuts, which appear to be driven by budgetary constraints.
In the state of Chihuahua, the impact is particularly acute. Reports indicate a temporary reduction of approximately 40 percent in milk purchases across the central-south region, affecting more than 600 producers. Local dairy farmers estimate daily losses of roughly 2.3 million pesos. The reduction threatens the viability of operations in areas such as Camargo, La Cruz, San Francisco de Conchos, and Saucillo, as producers must still cover costs for livestock feed, electricity, and labor while facing the risk of product spoilage.
Federal Deputy Arturo Zubía Fernández has proposed that Congress request the federal government and Leche para el Bienestar honor existing purchase agreements. He is calling on the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) to identify affected producers and calculate total financial losses to prevent farm closures and rural job losses.
