Mexican deportees face high barriers to economic reintegration

Mexican nationals deported from the United States are facing significant challenges regarding social and economic reintegration. Data indicates that only 12% of deportees have managed to secure formal employment in Mexico.

While the Mexican government launched the “México te Abraza” program in 2025 to facilitate IMSS social security affiliation for those expelled from the U.S., many struggle to restart their lives from scratch. Deportees report difficulties in finding formal work, saving for housing, and managing the traumatic nature of the detention and return process.

Beyond economic hurdles, the reintegration process is complicated by deep emotional and social ties to the United States. Many returnees express a sense of loss regarding family members left behind and the assets accumulated over decades of work in the U.S., making full integration into Mexican society feel nearly impossible for some.
