Mexican Deputy proposes treason charges for officials linked to organized crime

Federal Deputy Kenia López Rabadán of the National Action Party (PAN) has introduced an initiative to classify public officials who collaborate with drug trafficking organizations as traitors to the nation. The proposal seeks to amend Article 123 of the Federal Penal Code to include sanctions for those who provide protection, privileged information, or public resources that allow criminal groups to influence government functions.

The initiative targets misconduct affecting public security, the administration of justice, migration, customs, and state intelligence. Under the proposed law, convicted individuals could face prison sentences ranging from five to 40 years.

López Rabadán called upon the Morena, Labor Party (PT), and Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) to support the measure, emphasizing the need for national security and social stability over political ideology. She also criticized the lack of transparency regarding allegations made by U.S. authorities against certain high-ranking officials in Sinaloa and other regions.
