Mexican drug cartels recruit drone operators with Ukraine combat experience
Mexican drug cartels are increasingly recruiting drone operators with combat experience from the Ukraine conflict to enhance their operations. According to US and Mexican officials, criminal organizations are utilizing both financial incentives and coercion to hire individuals, particularly Colombian nationals, who have served in Ukraine.
These experts are being brought to Mexico to train local drone pilots, known as ‘droneros’. The cartels are also reportedly studying methods to evade anti-drone jamming systems and are acquiring advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) capable of carrying larger payloads and explosives.
Some criminal affiliates are even reportedly joining the Ukrainian military to gain direct battlefield experience in drone warfare. Officials warn that these tactics and technical skills borrowed from the conflict will significantly improve the capabilities of drug trafficking organizations.
