Mexican families curb summer trips as back‑to‑school expenses rise

Families in Cuautla, Morelos, and other Mexican towns are postponing or canceling their summer vacations because the cost of school supplies, uniforms, shoes and enrollment fees has surged. Parents say they will wait for official school supply lists before deciding on any travel, prioritising education expenses over holiday plans.

A mother in Cuautla estimated her child's school budget would reach about 1,500 pesos for supplies, with additional costs for uniforms and footwear pushing total spending to roughly 3,000 pesos. Another parent noted that private education costs rose 8.05 % year‑on‑year, while the national consumer price index for education rose 6.60 % in June. The higher outlay is also dampening summer sales for local businesses, as households set aside money for the upcoming school year instead of discretionary spending.
