Mexican football players face disciplinary scrutiny for misconduct

Alejandro Gómez, a defender for Xolos de Tijuana, is facing potential disciplinary action following a controversial gesture toward officials during a match against Club América. After receiving a direct red card via VAR for a foul on Brian Rodríguez, Gómez was captured on camera making a repetitive hand motion toward the referee, a gesture often associated with insinuating bribery. Under Mexican Football Federation regulations, such conduct can lead to fines and suspensions.

In a separate incident in the Liga de Expansión MX, Tepatitlán FC striker Julio César Cruz has been handed an 11-match suspension. The sanction follows an incident during a match against Cancún FC, where Cruz physically confronted referee Lizzet Amairany García Olvera after being sent off. The disciplinary commission categorized the punishment into three parts: one match for the second yellow card, three for offensive conduct, and seven for violent behavior. The suspension will keep Cruz out for the remainder of the Apertura 2026 season and a significant portion of the Clausura 2027.
