Mexico detains Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, alleged mastermind of ex‑mayor Carlos Manzo’s killing FAST-MOVING
Mexican federal forces detained Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as “R1”, who is identified as the intellectual author of the homicide of former Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo. Manzo was shot dead on 1 November 2025 during the Festival of Candles in Uruapan.
The arrest was announced by Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch after months of intelligence work involving the Secretariat of Security and Protection Citizen, special forces of the Mexican Army and the National Intelligence Center.
Authorities say Álvarez Ayala leads “Los Rs”, a violent cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) that engages in extortion, killings and drug trafficking in Michoacán and Jalisco. His capture brings the total number of detainees linked to the case to 31.
