Former Federal Prison Official Antonio Molina Detained Over 5 Billion‑Peso Embezzlement
Federal authorities arrested Antonio Molina Díaz, a former coordinator of Mexico's federal prison system, in Mexico City. The operation, carried out by the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) with security forces, seized false identities, mobile phones, US$2,500 in cash and MX$36,590, and placed the suspect under the jurisdiction of a federal judge in the State of Mexico.
Investigators allege that Molina participated in a scheme to divert more than five billion pesos through irregular contracts for the construction of eight federal penitentiaries between 2013 and 2018. The alleged network is linked to former public‑security secretary Genaro García Luna, and prosecutors have charged Molina with organized‑crime offenses, peculation and money‑laundering. He has been ordered to remain in preventive detention pending further judicial proceedings.
