Dengue outbreaks trigger intensified vector control in Mexico and Latin America
Health authorities across Mexico, Brazil and Panama reported rising dengue cases and stepped up vector‑control measures. In Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, a 42‑year‑old woman became the first confirmed case of dengue in 2026, prompting intensified surveillance, fumigation and larval‑control actions. Quintana Roo recorded its highest weekly increase of the year, adding 20 new cases for a total of 153 confirmed infections, a 101 % rise over the same period in 2025. Oaxaca confirmed 22 cases in epidemiological week 38; officials visited 87,220 homes, removed 52,594 mosquito‑breeding containers and treated 67,304 with larvicide. In Culiacán, Sinaloa, the municipal health director reported a green dengue alert with 33 cases and more than 70 tonnes of discarded containers collected during clean‑up campaigns. Brazil’s Goiás state logged 93,548 probable dengue cases between January and July 2026, with 75 deaths and a predominance of the DENV‑3 serotype. Lucas do Rio Verde saw confirmed cases rise to 173 and suspected cases to 149, deploying 300 ovitraps that were positive in 62 % of locations. Panama’s Colón province accumulated 1,220 cases, with health officials warning of a possible third dengue‑related death. Sonora, Mexico, applied 859 kg of larvicide, inspected over 2.4 million containers and fumigated nearly 84 000 ha. In Frontera, Coahuila, nightly ultra‑low‑volume fogging continues without any confirmed dengue cases. Across the region, authorities stress community participation in eliminating standing water, using repellents and seeking medical care promptly.
