Dominican Republic expands healthcare services in southern region
The National Health Service (SNS) in the Dominican Republic is implementing several infrastructure and service improvements across the southern region. In Bahoruco, an investment of over RD$120 million has facilitated the opening of a Diabetic Foot Unit at the San Bartolomé Provincial Hospital and the renovation of the Vista al Lago Primary Care Center. The Diabetic Foot Unit, the seventh of its kind in the national network, includes specialized consultation rooms and minor surgery facilities designed to reduce amputations. Additionally, a hemodialysis unit is nearing completion at the same hospital.
In San Juan, the SNS has renovated the Matayaya Primary Care Center with an investment exceeding RD$3.6 million, providing new equipment and expanded facilities for 24-hour care. Meanwhile, in Barahona, the Jaime Mota University Regional Hospital has restored its sonography services after a three-month hiatus and welcomed a new cohort of medical residents to strengthen specialized training. In Santiago, authorities have announced plans to establish a specialized burn unit at the José María Cabral y Báez Hospital to provide critical care for adults and reduce the need for transfers to Santo Domingo.
