Mexican hospitals face safety crises amid heat and power failures

Medical staff at Hospital General de Fresnillo in Zacatecas reported that a doctor lost consciousness during an emergency surgery after the operating theatre became excessively hot, allegedly due to inadequate ventilation and air‑conditioning. Videos shared by workers showed the surgeon feeling intense heat, becoming disoriented, and being revived by colleagues. The incident highlighted longstanding complaints by the health‑workers’ union about poor climate control in IMSS‑Bienestar facilities.

At the ISSSTE Fernando Ocaranza Hospital in Hermosillo, Sonora, a series of electrical outages and a ruptured oxygen‑supply pipe created chaos on 25 July. Fifteen power cuts left the emergency department and intensive‑care unit without electricity, while a burst oxygen tube released a large cloud of gas, prompting an emergency response from civil protection and firefighters. Staff said the faults jeopardised patient care and warned of possible repeat problems.

Both events underscore systemic safety and infrastructure deficiencies in Mexican public hospitals, raising concerns for patient and worker wellbeing.
