Mexican initiatives promote Mexican Sign Language and inclusion

Various Mexican municipalities and organizations are launching initiatives to promote Mexican Sign Language (LSM) and support the deaf community.

In Michoacán, the 3rd Michoacán Encounter of Mexican Sign Language, themed “Diversidad Visocultural 360°”, is scheduled for September 23–25, 2026. Hosted primarily at the Universidad Politécnica Lázaro Cárdenas, the event will feature conferences and workshops focused on bilingual education, family responsibility, and inclusive communication to empower deaf individuals and reduce communication barriers.

In Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, the municipal government has announced “Seña Fest” to be held on September 26 at the Plaza 28 de Julio amphitheater. Organized in coordination with civil society and the hearing-impaired community, the festival aims to foster empathy and accessibility through workshops, cultural activities, and artistic performances. The event will include lessons on basic LSM expressions and alphabet, alongside contributions from local artists.
