Mexican Judge Acquits Jesús Alberto Viveros in Orizaba Teacher Murder Case

A judge of the Veracruz state judiciary acquitted Jesús Alberto Viveros Caballero, known as “N,” of involvement in the February 2023 killing of teacher Verónica Fernández in Orizaba, Veracruz. The court found the prosecution’s evidence insufficient, citing surveillance footage covering an eight‑kilometre radius that showed no contact between Viveros and the crime and a witness statement that the alleged perpetrator acted alone. The judge ordered his immediate freedom, while the homicide investigation remains open.

Following more than three years in prison, Viveros was placed under house arrest after the acquittal. Family members and neighbours gathered to welcome him, expressing relief and affirming his innocence. Authorities continue to pursue the suspected material perpetrator, identified as Irma Ivón, and have announced a reward for information leading to her capture.
