Mexican Lawmaker Files Amparo to Block Cellphone Registration

Deputy Francisco Sánchez Villegas, coordinator of the Orange Bench of Movimiento Ciudadano, presented a massive amparo before the Specialized Telecommunications Courts in Mexico City. The filing seeks to overturn the law that obliges all mobile‑phone users to register their personal data, which Sánchez says constitutes mass surveillance and threatens civil liberties. He warned that the measure could lead to suspension or cancellation of service for anyone who refuses to register. In his statement he declared, “El registro de celulares nació como un instrumento de control y terminará sepultado bajo una montaña de amparos.” Sánchez announced plans to travel across Chihuahua and other states to gather signatures and promote the legal challenge, describing the effort as a defence of “the freedom of Mexico.”
