Mexican Lawmaker Rubén Moreira Calls for Guaranteed Diabetes Medications

Federal deputy Rubén Moreira Valdez urged the Mexican Health Secretariat to ensure a reliable supply of medicines for diabetes patients. He presented a Point of Agreement calling for reinforcement of the National Strategy for Diabetes Prevention and Control, including permanent health‑promotion campaigns, physical activity, early detection, diagnosis and comprehensive follow‑up, especially for high‑risk groups.

Moreira asked the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) and IMSS‑Bienestar to strengthen diabetes‑care programs, guarantee timely provision of insulin and other drugs, and supply monitoring equipment. He highlighted that the latest national health survey (ENSANUT, July 4) indicated that about one in five Mexican adults lives with diabetes, a burden driven by rising obesity rates. The deputy warned of the economic strain on families caused by treatment costs and the need to prevent complications such as renal failure, retinopathy, cardiovascular disease and amputations.
