Sheinbaum denounces ICE call against Mexican migrants as an offense to Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum returned from attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New York and condemned social‑media messages that urged the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) to act against Mexican supporters. She called the posts “painful, offensive and inaudible,” saying they constitute “an offense to Mexico” and demand a public apology from those who spread them, including entrepreneur Ricardo Salinas Pliego. Sheinbaum emphasized that millions of Mexican migrants work in the United States and send crucial remittances, arguing that such attacks harm both the workers and their families in Mexico. While defending the bilateral relationship with the United States, she insisted it must rest on mutual respect and sovereignty, not on subordination, and highlighted migration as a central issue in Mexico‑U.S. ties. The president also praised the diplomatic engagements surrounding the World Cup, noting meetings with leaders from the United States, Canada and Spain, and stressed that Mexico will continue to protect the rights and dignity of its citizens abroad.
