Mexican legislator Luis Fernando Salazar apologizes for threats against journalist

Mexican legislator Luis Fernando Salazar, a member of the Morena party, faced criticism after directing personal threats toward journalist Enrique Acevedo on social media. The lawmaker’s comments, made in response to a report he deemed inaccurate, included the statement, “Enrique Acevedo vamos a ir tras de ti” (Enrique Acevedo, we are going after you).

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo addressed the incident during a press conference, distancing herself from the deputy’s actions and urging public servants to avoid language that could be perceived as a threat. Following the backlash, Salazar deleted the post and issued a public apology, stating he valued the President’s commitment to press freedom.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of journalists in Mexico, where reports indicate seven journalists have been killed this year while performing critical reporting in local media.
