Mexican legislators address political access and electoral rulings

In Querétaro, Sinuhé Piedragil Ortiz, president of the Local Congress, defended the right of political actors and citizens to access the legislative headquarters. This stance follows a proposal by the National Action Party (PAN) to regulate facility use following visits by Santiago Nieto Castillo. Piedragil Ortiz described the Congress as ‘the House of the People’ and rejected any attempts to veto political figures, noting that political activity is inherent to the institution.

In Tamaulipas, Humberto Prieto Herrera, president of the Governing Board of the local Congress, announced that the legislature will comply with a Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) ruling despite expressing disagreement. The SCJN invalidated local electoral restrictions that prevented candidates for municipal offices from running if they were under preventive detention or linked to judicial processes. Prieto Herrera argued the court did not fully analyze the legislative intent, which he claimed was a linguistic adjustment rather than a fundamental electoral change, but confirmed the decision will be respected.
