Mexican legislators advance rights for vulnerable groups

The Mexican Commission for the Attention to Vulnerable Groups has approved three legislative reports aimed at strengthening the rights of persons with disabilities and older adults. These reforms include incorporating gender equity into the design and execution of labor inclusion policies for people with disabilities and ensuring the implementation of reasonable adjustments in administrative and judicial proceedings to guarantee equality.

Additionally, the commission approved a reform to the Law on the Rights of Older Adults to include the right to maintain functional capacities and promote healthy aging.

Separately, federal deputy Ivonne Ruiz Moreno has proposed reforms to the General Health Law to provide comprehensive mental health care for victims of gender-based violence. Highlighting that 7 out of 10 women in Mexico have experienced violence, Ruiz Moreno argued that the emotional consequences—such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD—constitute a public health emergency that requires specialized psychological and psychiatric attention beyond legal remedies.
