Mexican legislators demand electrical infrastructure investment and automatic outage compensation
Mexican PAN legislators are calling for increased federal investment in electrical infrastructure and the implementation of automatic compensation for users affected by power outages.
Federal Deputy Víctor Pérez Díaz, president of the Communications and Transportation Commission, has urged the federal government and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to allocate more budget to ensure a stable energy supply, particularly in Nuevo León. He noted that frequent outages are impacting homes, businesses, hospitals, and the industrial sector, which is critical for the state's economic growth and nearshoring efforts.
In a related legislative move, PAN deputies proposed a package of initiatives to establish automatic economic compensation for users facing recurrent and verifiable interruptions in basic electricity supply. The proposal suggests that the CFE should apply discounts directly to bimonthly bills without requiring users to file individual claims. The proposed compensation would be equivalent to one day of average consumption for every eight hours, or any fraction greater than four hours, of accumulated interruption during the billing period.
