Mexican Mezcal Makers from State of Mexico and Morelos Push International Growth
Ten mezcal brands from the State of Mexico will take part in Mundo Mezcal 2026, the leading agave‑industry showcase in Mexico. Five of the houses – Tres Piletas, Franja de Oro, Las Peñas, Rancho San Miguelito and Peña Colorada – received a Banco Azteca scholarship awarded through a partnership of CONCAEM, the bank and the festival organizers.
In the neighboring state of Morelos, mezcal producers are preparing to enter international markets after securing a Denominación de Origen in June 2025. The region’s 21 distilleries, collectively outputting about 500 litres per month, are upgrading facilities to meet certification standards. Juan Miguel Figueroa Romano, director of Sagrado Agave, noted that the DO “ha sido el motor principal para posicionar la marca Morelos en el mapa global del destilado.” Four distilleries are already certified, with several others in the final audit stages, aiming to increase export volumes in the near term.
