Priciliano Trejo's Death Highlights ICE Custody Neglect at Stewart Detention Center

Mexican migrant Priciliano Trejo, 29, who suffered from leukemia, died on 24 July 2026 in a Georgia hospital while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He had been detained in North Carolina on 19 June, transferred to the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, and requested medical care on 6 July. ICE did not provide treatment for eight days; he was finally taken to a hospital on 13 July, fell into a coma by 15 July, and ICE transferred his custody to his family that same day. ICE confirmed his death on 30 July.

The case has spurred migrant‑rights groups to allege medical neglect, call for an independent investigation, and demand the closure of the Stewart facility, which advocacy groups say has been linked to 15 migrant deaths. Mexico’s foreign ministry has filed 20 criminal complaints after 17 Mexican nationals died in ICE custody since May 2025, citing this incident as part of a broader pattern of alleged mistreatment.
