Mexican Migrants Celebrate US Residency on Ciudad Juárez Bridge

Migrants in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez have begun attaching padlock‑style “love locks” to a pedestrian bridge directly in front of the world’s largest U.S. consulate. The locks bear messages such as “Gracias a Dios” and family names, serving as a public thank‑you for finally receiving U.S. residency permits.

The ritual marks the moment some receive green cards after long waits – several men report waiting more than 20 years, one for 28 years, before finally obtaining permission to live in the United States. The bridge sees up to 31,000 daily border crossings, making it one of the world’s busiest crossing points.
