Mexican municipalities expand access to free civil registry services

Local governments in Mexico are implementing mobile and free civil registry programs to ensure citizens can access essential identity documents.

In Puerto Morelos, the municipal administration has launched the ‘Registro Civil Itinerante’ program. Through 12 community brigades, the government has provided free certified copies, birth registrations, marriages, and CURP printing. The administration reports a 36.2 percent increase in registered acts compared to the previous period, benefiting over 4,500 people. The program also includes specialized services such as biometric CURP assistance and 24-hour availability for death certificates.

Similarly, in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, the municipal government, in coordination with the state government, is conducting campaigns to provide free birth certificates and other civil status documents. These initiatives aim to strengthen the right to identity and provide legal certainty to families by making administrative procedures faster and more accessible, specifically targeting those facing difficulties in obtaining documentation.
