Xalapa officials promote sustainability at Central de Abasto and composting center

In Xalapa, Veracruz, Mayor Daniela Griego Ceballos has initiated collaborative efforts to improve the Central de Abasto through maintenance and cleaning activities. The municipal government aims to support local merchants by enhancing working conditions and promoting environmental sustainability.

As part of these sustainability efforts, the Municipal Composting Center currently processes 12 tons of organic waste daily, producing two tons of fertilizer. The administration has set a goal to increase this capacity to 90 tons of organic waste per day by partnering with major waste generators like local markets. To achieve this, work is already underway to establish a second composting center. These initiatives are intended to reduce the production of lixiviates in sanitary landfills and provide organic fertilizer to regional producers.
