Mexican musician and family murdered over $1.5M Bitcoin wallet

Jonathan Meléndez, a member of the Mexican rock band Camilo Séptimo, was murdered along with his family and housemaid in Atizapán. The victims included Meléndez’s four-month-pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter, and their housemaid.

Investigations by the Mexican State Prosecutor’s Office suggest the killings were motivated by Meléndez’s cryptocurrency holdings, specifically a hardware wallet containing approximately $1.5 million in Bitcoin. Authorities identified the motive as a debt dispute involving an associate, Diego Sebastian “N”, who allegedly used his relationship with Meléndez to gain entry to the home.

Mexican Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar Garcia Harfuch, announced the detention of two suspects less than 12 hours after the incident. One accomplice, identified as Gerardo “N”, was reportedly promised nearly $120,000 for his participation. The suspects face significant prison sentences for the multiple killings.
