Mexican Navy deploys 1,700 personnel in Sinaloa for security operation

The Mexican Navy (Semar) has deployed over 1,700 personnel, 25 drones, and three aircraft in Mazatlán and southern Sinaloa as part of ‘Operación Sable’. The operation aims to restore peace and weaken criminal infrastructure amid ongoing violence between Sinaloa Cartel factions. Recent actions in Mazatlán led to the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of weapons, vehicles, communication equipment, and over 4,400 doses of drugs, including methamphetamine and cocaine.

In Yucatán, Semar and Profepa are increasing maritime patrols to combat illegal fishing. Authorities are targeting the clandestine extraction of species such as octopus, grouper, sea cucumber, and pink conch, which threatens local ecosystems and legal fishing communities.

Additionally, as part of ‘Operación Salvavidas Verano 2026’, naval personnel have conducted several rescues in coastal areas. In Progreso, Yucatán, two people were rescued after being swept out to sea by currents, and in Guasave, Sinaloa, a man was saved from drowning at Las Glorias beach. In Yucatán, officials also addressed public concern regarding a sudden receding of sea levels, clarifying it was a natural tidal phenomenon and not a sign of a tsunami or earthquake.
