Mexican Navy member dies in shooting at Progreso naval facilities

A member of the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina) died following a shooting incident at the Port Protection Naval Unit (UNAPROP) in Progreso, Yucatán. The incident occurred within the naval facilities, which also serve as living quarters for personnel.

Reports regarding the cause of the shooting vary. Some accounts suggest a dispute between a sailor and a petty officer (maestre) escalated into gunfire, while other reports indicate the incident may have been an accidental discharge during the handling of a firearm. One individual reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene, while another was injured and required medical attention.

The Ninth Naval Zone confirmed the death and stated that emergency protocols were immediately activated. Authorities are currently conducting investigations, forensic examinations, and legal proceedings to determine the exact circumstances and establish responsibility. The Mexican Navy has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and pledged to cooperate with competent authorities to clarify the event.
