Mexican Navy rescues 10 Cuban migrants near Isla Mujeres

The Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina) rescued 10 Cuban men drifting in a small wooden vessel approximately 12 nautical miles south of Isla Mujeres. The rescue operation was initiated after a cruise ship spotted the raft and reported its location.

The migrants reported being adrift for four days in adverse Caribbean conditions. Upon rescue, one individual was treated for severe dehydration at the Advanced Naval Station of Puerto Juárez. The group, which includes individuals from Isla de la Juventud and Pinar del Río, has been placed under the custody of the National Institute of Migration (INM).

During their transfer, one of the men expressed a desire for asylum. The INM will determine their migratory status following internal processes. This incident follows a pattern of small vessel arrivals from Cuba along the coasts of Cancún and Isla Mujeres.
