Mexican Navy rescues Cuban migrants in Yucatán after nine days adrift

The Mexican Navy rescued a group of Cuban migrants in the waters northeast of Progreso, Yucatán, after they spent nine days adrift at sea. The group departed from Pinar del Río on August 11, traveling in a vessel that suffered mechanical failures and lost fuel, forcing them to use a blue tarp as an improvised sail to continue toward Mexico.

While initial reports indicated that all passengers were found alive, subsequent reports from journalists citing sources close to the families confirm the death of two-year-old twins, Leosdel and Leosniel. The children were traveling with their mother, Yusimy Garrobo Leiva, to reunite with their father in Cancún.

The survivors were provided with medical attention and handed over to the National Institute of Migration. The incident highlights the extreme risks faced by families, including young children, attempting maritime routes from Cuba to Mexico.
