Los Cabos councilman reports robbery involving phone tracked to Navy base
Celestino Atienzo, a councilman for Los Cabos and member of the National Action Party (PAN), reported being the victim of an armed robbery on October 9 in the Toro Muerto area of San José del Cabo. The attack involved two hooded, armed men who targeted Atienzo and six others, seizing seven mobile phones, a vehicle, and approximately 100,000 pesos in cash.
Controversy arose when GPS tracking indicated that one of the stolen devices, a Reno12 model, was last located within the barracks of the 46th Marine Infantry Battalion (BIM-46). Atienzo raised concerns regarding the lack of access control protocols at the military installation, noting that the device appeared to enter the facility shortly after the robbery.
The Mexican Navy (SEMAR) stated it is cooperating with the State Attorney General's Office (PGJE) of Baja California Sur. During a search of the military site conducted by prosecutors, the stolen device was not found. The PAN has demanded a thorough investigation to clarify how the device reached the naval installations and to determine any potential responsibilities.
