Mexican Navy retires explosive detection dog Hermes

The Mexican Navy (Semar) held a ceremony in Manzanillo, Colima, to honor the retirement of Hermes, a Belgian Malinois specialized in explosive detection. After seven years and eight months of service, the canine was officially retired due to age limits.

Hermes joined the Mexican Navy on January 1, 2019, and underwent training with the Canine Binomial Operations and Control Group (GOCBC) in Mexico City. Since May 2020, he has been assigned to the Sixth Naval Region, primarily operating in the port of Manzanillo. During his tenure, Hermes participated in various inspection and surveillance operations, where his ability to locate and mark explosives contributed to the interception of weaponry and explosive materials.

The retirement ceremony included a symbolic gesture where Hermes left behind his collar, leash, and harness. Following his service, the dog will transition to a private home to live in retirement.
