Mexican Navy sinks ex-vessel Baranda to create artificial reef
The Mexican Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) conducted a controlled sinking of the former patrol vessel ARM Baranda near Punta Juluapan in the bay of Santiago, Manzanillo, Colima. The vessel was positioned at a depth of 25 meters and approximately 300 meters from the coast to serve as part of the Colima Artificial Reef System (SAAC).
This initiative aims to promote marine ecosystem conservation by providing habitats for refuge, feeding, and reproduction for various flora and fauna species. The project is being carried out in coordination with the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources, the Secretariat of Tourism, and the Government of Colima to support sustainable maritime management and boost eco-tourism, including diving and scientific research.
Before the sinking, technical inspections ensured the removal of fuels, lubricants, batteries, and hazardous materials to prevent contamination. Specialized personnel used controlled explosive charges to complete the procedure. The Baranda is the second vessel to join the project, following the ARM Cora, which was sunk on October 16. The Baranda completed 45 years of service in the Mexican Navy.
