Mexican Notary Candidate Proposes Anti-Money Laundering Strategy
José Luis Leal Campos, a candidate for the presidency of the National College of Mexican Notaries, has proposed the implementation of uniform criteria across the country to identify and prevent money laundering operations.
During a visit to Tamaulipas, Leal Campos announced that the College is developing a single, risk-based platform designed to evaluate the risk levels of individual notaries, clients, and specific operations. The goal is to standardize notary actions regarding vulnerable operations and prevent regional differences in criteria from being exploited to hide illicit funds.
The new tool is expected to be presented during the National Congress of the Mexican Notaries in Guadalajara from November 5 to 7. Leal Campos also addressed the role of technology, stating that while artificial intelligence can accelerate processes and support the profession, it cannot replace the legal authority of a notary.
