Dafne Zapata death triggers femicide probe of Doenitz military academy

On 16 July 2026, 13‑year‑old Dafne Zapata Quintos died during a summer camp at the private Academia Militarizada Marina Doenitz in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas. A second necropsy identified asphyxia by submersion as the cause of death, and the investigation was opened as femicide.

The state prosecutor’s office has placed the academy’s director, owners and staff under a femicide file. The first arrest was of 18‑year‑old Danna Yanina “N”, an auxiliary of the women’s area, who voluntarily appeared before the specialized prosecutor and was then taken into custody on a judicial arrest order. Additional personnel, including the women’s‑area sergeant “Estrellita” (Gioconda Beauvoir Mora), are also being questioned.

The academy’s name, honoring Nazi admiral Karl Donitz, has fueled public outrage. Families, students and local officials have organized marches in El Mante and elsewhere demanding justice. President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for a review of the operation of militarized academies in Tamaulipas, while the academy’s director has asserted that the death was not caused by natural water.
