Mexican Olmec art exhibition opens in Niš

An exhibition titled ‘Colossal Heads of the Gulf of Mexico’ is being held at the Oficirski dom in Niš, Serbia, from September 2 to September 12. Organized by the City of Niš and the Embassy of Mexico in Serbia, the event commemorates 80 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Mexico.

The exhibition features 29 color and black-and-white photographs depicting the monumental stone sculptures created by the Olmec civilization in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. These colossal heads, carved from volcanic basalt, are believed to represent powerful Olmec rulers. There are 17 confirmed heads located in the Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco, with heights ranging from 1.17 to 3.4 meters and weights reaching up to 50 tons.

The Olmecs inhabited the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico from 1200 to 400 BCE and are considered influential predecessors to later civilizations, such as the Maya and Aztecs. The exhibition was prepared by the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico.
