López Beltrán and Amílcar Olán accused of genocide in Mexico drug scandal

On October 7, 2026, several advocacy groups, including the Movimiento Nacional por la Salud Papás de Niños con Cáncer, Fundación Nicoatole A. C., and De Corazón A. C., filed a formal criminal complaint with Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

The complaint targets Andrés Manuel López Beltrán and businessman Jorge Amílcar Olán Aparicio, accusing them of genocide, organized crime, and involuntary manslaughter. The organizations allege that a corrupt scheme involving irregular contracts, overpricing, and the use of shell companies led to a systematic shortage of essential oncology medications.

Activists claim this shortage has directly resulted in the deaths of more than 5,000 children. They further allege that some acquired medications were of low quality or counterfeit. While the groups demand accountability, President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that any investigation into the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the FGR. Previous reports from the FGR indicated no active investigations into the accused individuals.
