Mexican peso appreciation impacts exporters and boosts international travel
The appreciation of the Mexican peso against the US dollar is creating divergent economic outcomes for different sectors. For exporters, the lower exchange rate is exerting pressure on profit margins, particularly in manufacturing and non-oil sectors. Companies must now adjust prices or accept lower returns to remain competitive in markets like the United States.
Conversely, the strong peso is significantly benefiting importers of raw materials and equipment, as well as the tourism sector. Data shows a surge in Mexican citizens traveling abroad, with 4.9 million people traveling by air between January and July, an 11.2 percent annual increase. This trend has led to a 24 percent growth in foreign exchange generated by outbound travelers, totaling over 5 billion dollars. Popular destinations include the United States, Canada, and Spain.
