Mexican political parties urged to tighten candidate vetting against organized crime

Senator Ruth González Silva of the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico said parties must reinforce internal filters and ensure candidates have an "intachable" record after the National Electoral Institute (INE) admitted it lacks authority to investigate alleged “narco‑politics” links. She stressed that each party is responsible for selecting candidates with clean conduct and social behavior.

In Tamaulipas, subsecretary of Legislative Liaison Romulo Pérez Sánchez echoed the call, noting that while the INE’s Commission for Verification of Candidate Integrity will provide information from the prosecutor's office, the Federal Financial Intelligence Unit, the National Banking and Securities Commission and other agencies, it is up to the parties to apply strict vetting. He added that aspirants will need to sign an agreement allowing these checks, aiming to prevent infiltration of organized‑crime groups ahead of the 2027 elections.
