Mexican politicians call for electoral roll updates and increased oversight for 2027

Mexican political figures are calling for increased oversight and corrections to electoral rolls ahead of the 2027 elections, which will see the renewal of 17 governorships.

Federal Deputy Mario Zamora Gastélum of the PRI urged the National Electoral Institute (INE) to purge party registries of deceased individuals to ensure accuracy. He noted that the upcoming elections will be closely monitored by both domestic and international observers, which he believes will promote transparency and prevent violence.

Senator Manlio Fabio Beltrones also issued a call to action, urging civil society and opposition parties to organize a “mirror system” to document results. Beltrones argued that due to the perceived weakening of the INE and the Electoral Tribunal, citizens must be prepared to provide rapid, precise results to prevent the manipulation of figures, citing organized opposition efforts in Venezuela as a model for ensuring electoral legitimacy.
