Spanish ports move over 420 million tonnes of cargo through September
Spanish state-owned ports recorded a total cargo movement of 420.6 million tonnes during the first nine months of 2026, representing a 1.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This growth occurred despite geopolitical uncertainty and rising fuel costs.
Liquid bulk cargo saw a 3.6% increase, reaching 138.3 million tonnes, driven by the energy and chemical sectors. In contrast, solid bulk cargo experienced a slight decline of 0.3%, totaling 60.1 million tonnes. Container traffic (TEUs) rose by 1.1%, with import-export activities growing by 2.3%.
Regional performance varied significantly. Valenciaport reported a strong September with a 5.48% increase in container traffic and an 11.68% rise in imports. PortCastelló showed significant growth in general cargo, increasing by 48.7%. Conversely, the Port of Gijón (El Musel) faced challenges, recording an 18.9% drop in total cargo movement between January and September, the sharpest decline in the national network.
