Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised internationally, rejects Trump’s cartel claim
The British newspaper The Guardian named Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum among the world’s most popular elected leaders, citing approval ratings around or above 70 percent and describing her as a strong figure of the international left after her 2024 election victory by a 32‑point margin.
Sheinbaum later responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks at the G7 summit that Mexico is controlled by drug cartels. She said Trump’s comments were poorly informed, recalling a recent meeting with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and emphasizing the work of Mexican security officials such as Omar García Harfuch and Ricardo Trevilla Trejo. She highlighted results like a 46 % drop in intentional homicide and a 70 % reduction in fentanyl shipments to the United States following the February operation that killed cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (“El Mencho”).
